It isn't helped by the handbrake switches being different - up for On and down for Off (Volvo) is natural and logical, but the Mercedes is down (pushed into the dashboard) for On and up (toward me) for Off - opposite to the Volvo and also the opposite of old cars with a dash-mounted cable handbrake! The Volvo's requirement for two separate movements to select D or R is confusing - particularly as I drive both cars - and several times I've found myself in the XC40 trying to start off from traffic lights in neutral, then double-tapping and wondering why the engine is then revving too high (I'm now in Manual Shift!). The other button gives you direct drive, and overdrive in the upper 4 gears, since the low gear position is not reused in the pattern. If you were to start in low gear, you would shift 1-5 as you normally would, and then would flip the button up for the next range as you are used to. One button is the range shift, and it moves in the standard up and down pattern you are used to.
